When we went to visit the Grotes de Han cave, Erika was very fascinated with the crystals that we saw. The next week, we did a little chemistry in the kitchen to make our own crystals. We simply dissolved 3 cups of sugar in 1 cup of boiling water to dissolve the sugar and make a solution. Then we took clean jars and poured the solution in them. To make it fun, we added 1/2 t of flavor to Erika's and Austin's jar. Then we took a wet wooden BBQ skewer and rolled into sugar and placed it in the jar so that crystals would grow on it. The crystals were supposed to be ready by Halloween, but were ready a couple of days before. Erika and Austin had tons of fun watching their crystals grow. They also had fun eating them.

How fun! What a great idea to have them make the crystal candy!
